Gary passed away in 1996. In his honor, OCADA established the “Gary Tuthill Memorial Athletic Trainer Award” recognizing county athletic trainers and to celebrate his noteworthy achievements, leadership qualities and championing our cause in education.

Bill Boswell Distinguished Service Award

Coach William “Bill” Boswell was born and raised in Orange County. He attended Huntington Beach High School and went on to graduate from USC. Bill’s coaching and teaching career began in 1957 at Artesia High School. In 1959 he was hired as the first head football coach of Westminster High School, where he continued for nineteen years. He retired as head coach in 1978, posting a 120 wins 65 loss 5 tie record, but continued coaching the sophomore teams for several years. Bill retired from teaching in 1994 after 37 years in the classroom. Coach Boswell served as Westminster High School's Athletic Director for many years and served as the Athletic Director for the Huntington Beach Union High School District. He served as Vice President for the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame for many years.

Bill served as the President of the Orange County Athletic Directors Association, one term as the President of California State Athletic Directors Association, and was the Conference Manager for the California State Athletic Directors Association. In addition he served on the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and taught the District Walk-On Coach Certification classes since 1995.

According to Bill himself, the biggest highlights of his career were not the number of victories or championships, it was the ability to help young men work through their problems. He once said, "My greatest moments were the individual victories that I won with individual boys that made changes in their lives." At Westminster High School and around the community words like "legend" and "icon" have been used to describe Bill Boswell.

Coach Boswell was honored by the HBUHSD in 1998 by having the football field on the Westminster High School campus named William "Bill" Boswell Field. Bill exemplified leader and stewardship throughout his many years of service and guidance to OCADA. For those reasons in 2016 the Bill Boswell Distinguished Service Award was created to recognize those who have given back to their communities.
